Welcome to 6th Grade Math!
Math CRCT is Monday, April 16th!3/28: CRCT review has begun! As a 6th grade math team, we are working together to review material students have learned this year by doing fun stations in the media center. We started today and will continue after Spring Break leading up to the CRCT. Homework will be minimal but each day we may ask them to complete a few problems not finished during stations in class. During the week of CRCT, the only homework will be to rest and relax so they will be refreshed the following day!
Here's a link for extra practice: http://www.glencoe.com/sec/math/studytools/mac1stp.shtml 3/20: We are wrapping up the 6th grade math standards before
preparing for the CRCT. This week the students are learning how to read and create different types of graphs/charts.Next week we will spend most or all of the weekreviewing what we have learned all year in 6th grade math to study for the CRCT. The math portion of the CRCT is schedule for Monday 4/16. Each student was given a blue sheet with their individual test scores from CRCT, semester grades, and the CRCT diagnostic from February. On the sheet included log in information for the OAS website where they can independently practice CRCT-like questions online at home. If you have any questions about that, please email me and I'll get you the details you need. 3/8: Happy Thursday! No school tomorrow for students! The 3rd quarter ends Monday so Tuesday's test will not be counted in the 3rd quarter grading period. Yes, Tuesday is the Unit 5 test on geometry and 3d figures. We handed out the study guide today in class. If students complete it ENTIRELY, they will be given 5 bonus points towards the test, but it's due for a grade on Tuesday. Below is the study guide we handed out in class.
2/24: Happy Friday! Today the students took the math portion of the CRCT diagnostic. I am anxiously waiting to see the results. We will continue with testing science and social studies on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday we will go back to the regular schedule. We are continuing with our geometry unit and have covered areas of a triangle and circle. Today we will start going over finding surface area of a rectangular prism. This unit pulls in prior knowledge of order of operations, exponents, and working with fractions and decimals. Next week we will be finishing up the unit and starting the study guide to prepare for the test scheduled for Wed. 3/6.
2/16: We are continuing with our Geometry unit. This week we have worked with measurement and three dimensional figures. Next week, we will continue with three dimensional figures and netting. Wednesday through the following Tuesday, the entire school will be doing a mock CRCT; therefore, we will only see students three or four days instead of five. The homework will be minimal during this time.
2/10: Today we practiced converting US customary units and the Metric system. We went over last night's homework, practiced together as a class, and then handed out a homework quiz containing both systems of measurement. Since they can use their notes and book, we are hoping for many 100%'s on the homework quiz! Next week we will continue with measurement and geometry. Next week is a four day week, no school on Friday or the following Monday.
2-3: This week we finished up Part A of Unit 4 and started Part B: MEASUREMENT! We will be learning about both the US customary units and the metric system. We will teach how to convert within the two systems, but NOT between them.....we'll save dimensional analysis for 8th grade advanced science.....although I personally love doing that!
Part B requires some memorization of the units, so I recommend students reviewing the material nightly and ideally creating notecards. The two sets of notecards could be colored coded: US System & Metric System 1/27: We are prepping for the Unit 4 test scheduled for Tuesday! Below is the study guide we handed out today and started working on in class. Monday we will play a review game to get them excited about the mastering the material. After the test we will start working on measurements!
1/10- Happy New Year! Now that the students have been back for a few days, we are back in the groove. This week we have been working on function rules, graphing ordered pairs, and working with tables for linear functions. It's a higher level concept, but we will keep practicing! This week we started a CRCT countdown! Each day we will work through one CRCT-like problem in a spiral notebook. A week before CRCT, we will have created a study guide with each day's CRCT question!!
12/16- WOW! Only four days left of first semester!
We have handed out the study guides and reviewing for the midterms has begun! We will spend today and Monday solely reviewing. Students will take midterms Tuesday through Thursday. Below is an attachment of the study guide we handed out. I hope this weekend is dedicated to studying for math and other academic classes- the time invested will reap high dividends! To the right is the agenda for the rest of the semester! Winter break begins Friday, 12/23! Second semester starts for students on Thursday, 1/5!
11/30- We have been working on solving equations and proportions. I love the Algebra in 6th grade math! I've been noticing though that students who didn't fully understand fractions and how to reduce them are starting to struggle with this new concept.
Remember, PROPORTIONS: "CROSS MULTIPLY & DIVIDE!!!" ....show your steps! Below are some links to extra practice on the material we taught this week. It is very important for the students to practice, practice, practice solving equations. Today we took the Unit 2B test. So far, I am disappointed in the tests that I've graded. Students that didn't finish will be given some additional time next week to finish. We will offer some sort of remediation as well. Over the next few weeks, we will have several hands on, "kinesthetic" learning while working with ratios and equations for Unit 3! This unit we will teach the students how to solve equations. It is CRITICAL that students master this concept for them to be successful in 8th grade math! If you notice they are struggling, please let me know, and I'll be sure to work with them and provide you and your child with additional practice at home. Thanks!!! Today we started a Shopping Spree project in class, due Tuesday. They will be practicing fractions, decimals, and percents with this. They need to “purchase” at least 8 items (I would stick with less than 10) and spend up to $350 after tax. We are using the newspaper ads for them to select the items they will purchase.
Also, yesterday we handed out the study guide for next Friday’s test. We will be reviewing through stations and study guide Q & A Tuesday-Thursday. ____________________________________________________ Changes to Academic Lab during the Week: Starting the week of November 7th we will begin the following schedule: Monday: Lunch n' Learn Tuesday: Working Lunch Wednesday: Lunch n' Learn Thursday: Working Lunch Lunch n' Learn - students are invited to attend, based on data, during the entire 5th period (normally lunch and Advisement). The idea is to provide remediation for students who did not master certain standards. The rosters of Lunch n' Learn will change every couple of weeks, just as topics in focus. Working Lunch will be like Academic Lab, but will be for the entire period. Students may come in at any time during this period to receive help on the material we are covering currently in class. Mr. Goodwin and Ms. Powers will be switching off on who will cover Advanced and who will cover On-Level. Once this schedule is confirmed, I will post it here. Please let me know if you have any questions! |
