Welcome to 8th grade Math!
3/28: CRCT review has begun! As an 8th grade math team, we are working together to review material students have learned this year. We started today and will continue after Spring Break leading up to the CRCT. Homework will be minimal, but each day we may ask them to complete a few problems not finished in class. During the week of CRCT, the only homework will be to rest and relax so they will be refreshed the following day!
Online math practice for Chapter 1,2,3,6,10, &11: http://www.glencoe.com/sec/math/msmath/mac04/course3/standardized_test/index.php/ga ß 3/20: We are in the middle of Unit 7: Probability already. We've spent a couple days on Venn Diagrams and Set Notation. Tomorrow we will start simple probability and finish the week out with predicting probability, tree diagrams, and compound independent probability. Part of next week will also be probability and then we will finish next week off with preparing for the CRCT by reviewing everything we've learned this year.
Each student was given a green sheet with their individual test scores from CRCT, semester grades, and the CRCT diagnostic from February. On the sheet included log in information for the OAS website where they can independently practice CRCT-like questions online at home. If you have any questions about that, please email me and I'll get you the details you need. 3/8: No school for students tomorrow! Today and Monday we will be practicing solving systems of INEQUALITIES to wrap up Unit 6. The test is scheduled for next Friday, 3/16. Below is a study guide we will hand out in class next week. After Unit 6, is Unit 7 on PROBABILITY. This is our last unit before prepping for the CRCT! It's crazy how fast this school year has flown by! Also below is the unit planner.
2-24: Happy Friday! Today the students took the math portion of the CRCT diagnostic. I am anxiously waiting to see the results. We will continue with testing science and social studies Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday we will go back to the regular schedule with plans to test the students on Unit 5: Inequalities. We’ve been reviewing and will continue to review Monday and Tuesday. Below is the study guide we handed out in class this week that will be collected before the test for a grade. Tests are worth 50% of the overall grade and the study guide is an EXCELLENT tool to prepare. We will start Unit 6: System of Equations/Inequalities Thursday. This will be a relatively short unit.
Also below is a calendar for the next couple weeks.
2-16: D.C. Trip! With half of the students leaving for the D.C. trip this afternoon, we are not teaching new material. Instead, we are doing an optional Unit 4 test recovery. If each question is fully and accurately solved, students can earn up to 10 points to their test grade. Below is the recovery we handed out in class. If your child didn't have math class today and would like the extra points, I will collect them on Tuesday after the 4-day weekend.
We are slowly wrapping up Unit 5: inequalities. Next week, we will apply the concepts to real world situations, a.k.a. word problems. Next Wednesday is the start of the 5 day mock CRCT. We will not see every student each day. There's an attachment with the testing schedule. The unit 5 test is scheduled for 2/29.
2-10: Today we took a homework quiz on solving and graphing inequalities. Many students did well! All of the questions were from this week's homework, so they should have seen them already. Next week we will continue with solving and graphing inequalities, but it will be with LINEAR inequalities (ex: y<2x-3) We'll spend three solid days on this and Thursday we will review. Many students are going on the DC trip Thursday, and there is no school on Friday or the following Monday. Please look at the agenda to the right for next week's homework.
2-3: Today we finished up Unit 4 on Slope. Monday we start Unit 5 on Inequalities. If students know how to solve equations and graph, this will be an easy concept. The only "new" information are the four types of inequalities: less than, greater than, less than or equal to, and greater than or equal to. We will be spending about 2.5 weeks on this unit and then we'll move to Unit 6: Systems of Equations. There will be a school wide MOCK CRCT 2/22-2/28, but I'll give a schedule of that when we get closer.
At some point next week, we will be giving a small quiz to assess how the students are doing. 1-27: We are prepping for the Unit 4 test! Wednesday we finished teaching new material. The next few days we will dedicate to summarizing all we learned and getting ready for the two day assessment. Thursday 2/2 and Friday 2/3 we will test on Unit 4: SLOPE, relations and functions. Below is the study guide we will hand out Monday in class. Working lunch will be offered Tuesday and Thursday and is HIGHLY recommended for all students to attend!
1-13 Today we took a quiz over slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines, rate of change (slope), and x- & y-intercepts. So far, the results are good!
Next week we will look at: linear & nonlinear relationships and writing linear functions (equations) from a table. With Monday being a holiday and Wednesday being the Georgia writing assessment, we will only have three full days of math. As of now, the Unit 4 test will be Thursday, Feb. 2 AND Friday, Feb. 3. Yes! A two day test! Unit 4 is a HUGE and incredibly important unit; therefore, we need to make it a two day test to cover all the concepts and standards. We will be reviewing the three days before it. Have a wonderful 3-day weekend! 1-10 HAPPY NEW YEAR! The students have been back for a few days and we are back in the groove. We are continuing to work on Unit 4: SLOPE. This week we are focusing on slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines, x-intercepts/y-intercepts, and rate of change.
Also, I will be available to help students, by appointment, most mornings 8-8:30 and during first advisement lunch. End of First Semester....12-16 WOW! Only four days left of first semester!
We have handed out the study guides and reviewing for the midterms has begun! We will spend today and Monday solely reviewing. Students will take midterms Tuesday through Thursday. Below is an attachment of the study guide we handed out. I hope this weekend is dedicated to studying for math and other academic classes- the time invested will reap high dividends! To the right is the agenda for the rest of the semester! Winter break begins Friday, 12/23! Second semester starts for students on Thursday, 1/5!
12-6- We are continuing new material for Unit 4. We will spend the rest of this week and next looking at SLOPE: How to graph...Write linear equations...Finding slope & y-intercept.....What are the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines.....It's a HUGE concept with lots of details. To the right you will see the agenda for this week and the rest of the semester. Please make sure homework is completed each night as it's essential to practice for understanding. Finals will be Tuesday (12/20) -Thursday(12/22)! Winter break starts Friday, 12/23! Now is definitely the time to make sure ALL work is complete and any assessments have been made up. Incomplete work and quizzes & tests not taken will be marked as 0's. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE finish strong this semester!! Ask for help and attend working lunches if you are struggling with the material. 11/30- Unit 4 has started! Unit 4 is entirely dedicated to SLOPE......an incredibly important math concept for 8th grade math! Monday and Tuesday we discussed Relations and Functions to prep us for slope. Today we started SLOPE (steepness of a line & the four main types of linear graphs). It is essential for students to study their notes, ask questions in class, and come to help sessions if they are confused. This unit will carry over into second semester for a few weeks. I will be posting websites to practice for this unit under the LINKS tabs at the top. Please email me: [email protected] if you have any questions. By the way, this is my FAVORITE unit all year!!!!
11/17- Today is the Unit 3 Test! Many students have done exceptionally well! Tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday before Thanksgiving break, we will be practicing "pre-req" material before starting Unit 4 on Slope. The review material will cover plotting points, the 4 quadrants, evaluating, and solving equations. This will help them get warmed up for Unit 4- our power unit. This unit will carry over into second semester.
11/11- Happy Veteran's Day- First of all, thank you to all the veterans for their service to our country!
Today we took a quiz on all math standards covered in Unit 3. So far, the quizzes are looking great! We originally were going to give the Unit 3 test Wednesday, but are now going to give it Thursday. Wednesday is Career Day! Please look at the agenda to the right for next week. Also, if your child is planning on missing school over the week of Thanksgiving, please have them come see me by Wednesday for math work. 11/4- Today we gave a quiz on Lines & Angles and the Pythagorean Theorem. We are almost done with our geometry unit (Unit 3). Next week we will finish it up by learning about setting up proportions and congruency. The following week we will review for two days and then take the test on Wed., 11/16 10/29- Today we took a quiz on the Pythagorean Theorem. We've been practicing using the theorem in a variety of ways for over a week and a half. The core of this unit is the Pythagorean Theorem. If your child didn't do well, please encourage them to study their notes and perhaps practice online: http://www.factmonster.com/math/knowledgebox/player.html?movie=sfw41555
Next week we will discuss Angle pair relationships and will conclude the week with a quiz on Friday. |
